How to become a better writer in 30 days

So, one of the questions I get a lot is this:

“Toyin, how can I learn to write like you?”

First, you can’t write like me because you are not me. I write the way I write because of my personal experiences and skill.

But you can be a very good writer.

Writing is only a skill and like any other skill, what it takes to perfect it is practise.

I don’t think I am naturally good at this.

I learnt how to write by doing 2 things well.

Reading and writing.

I believe anyone can turn themselves into a better writer in 30 days.

Maybe not an oscar-worthy type of writing but you can turn out good enough writing.

How do you do this?

You do it by blocking out 1 hour every day for 30 days.

Same time. E.g. if you decide to do this between 7am-8am, it must be 7am – 8am daily.

During this time, you are going to do 2 things.

(1) For the first 30 minutes, you are going to read any interesting material you can lay your hands on.

Novels

Newspapers

Blogposts

Magazines

Etc

Then once your timer goes off, you pick your pen and a book and you start writing.

What do you write about?

You write about anything that is in your head.

You can write about what you just read

Or about that colleague of yours who is always getting you annoyed.

Or about that guy/girl that you have a crush on

Or about the silly mosquito that gave you a hard time while you were sleeping.

Just write straight for 30 minutes.

Don’t care about your grammar or spelling.

This is not WAEC

Just write.

Then once your timer goes off, put your book away and repeat same the next day.

Do this for 30 days straight.

And if you are not a better writer by then, you are free to call me a scam.
